What to
Look For in a Site Monitoring Service
By
Mark Bailey
|
Site monitoring
products and services range from bare-bones free services
that merely alert you to downtime to costly services that
can tell you response times on most of the Internet
backbones. What to look for in a site monitoring
service depends on how you plan to use the data, and how
valuable the data is to you in terms of cost
justification. If you have
a small or medium-sized business, we'll assume that at a
minimum you're concerned with knowing that your site is up
and running. Beyond that, you'll probably want additional
information to let you know how your Internet
service provider (ISP) is performing. You'll also
want to know whether you need to make changes to the
content of your Web site in order to improve the download
times, which affect your customers' experience of your
site. Below is a checklist of nine things to consider when
selecting a site monitoring service:
Can you afford the
service?
Consider the cost of acquiring
new customers vs. pleasing the ones you have. Also,
consider the cost of losing customers when people tell
others about the poor experience they had with your site.
Multiply that by all customer visits in a year, and you'll
likely find that the cost of site monitoring is far lower.
If the service is free,
is it adequate?
There are a few free site
monitoring services available on the Web. The problem is
that you get what you pay for, which means that these
services may be inadequate and/or unreliable. When
considering a free site monitoring service, you should
realize that one that has been around for more than a few
months has probably worked out the problems that you might
encounter with a brand-new service. Likewise, an
established free service with a substantial customer base
is more likely to continue offering its services free of
charge.
Is site monitoring the
company's core business?
Some monitoring services are
packaged with or are an adjunct to other Web maintenance
tools. When considering such a service, ask how often it
updates its site monitoring technology specifically. This
will help you to determine whether the site monitoring
service is just an afterthought.
How fast are the
service's Internet connections
At a minimum, you'll want to make
sure that the site monitoring service has
T-1 connections to the Internet. And
preferably, the data it produces will contain information
on the response times for both home and business
users, that is, 56 kilobits per second, and
T-1 connections, respectively.
How reliable is the
service's engine?
One of the best-known — and most
expensive — site monitoring services is unavailable two
evenings per week between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., due to
maintenance. From your perspective, that is six hours of
downtime every week. Be sure you know whether the service
is monitoring only 21 hours of the day and not the full
24.

What does
the service monitor?
Some services
monitor only whether your site is up or down while others
produce much more elaborate information about a user's
experience. It doesn't take much effort for a service to
ping your site several
times an hour to determine if it is up, but that doesn't tell
you much about how your customer perceives you. If your concern
is your customer's experience, that should also be the site
monitoring service's concern. That means it should offer
accurate information on which elements of your site perform well
and which perform poorly.
Aside from sending alerts
when your site goes down, most services will give you
information about response time. The next feature you'll likely
want is some data on download times. These two terms are often
defined a little differently: Response time will almost always
be the time it takes for the initial part of a page download (DNS
look-up, TCP/IP handshaking), whereas download time includes
information on the download of the components that make up your
page (images,
applets, etc.).
Are the alerts and
reports accurate and relevant?
Efficient reporting is
essential. You don't want to be digging through endless screens
to get to the data you need, and you don't want to be limited to
a canned reporting structure that you can't use. Most services
have some sort of free trial, whether real-time or otherwise try
them out. When evaluating the data, it's important to keep in
mind how you will use it. It may be impressive to receive lots
of data, but is it useful? Is it really the data you need?
Does the service
provide enough information to resolve problems?
As with reporting, it's
not the amount of data you receive that matters but how you can
use it. Remember to keep your objectives in mind: Do you need to
know how your site appears to customers, or do you simply need
to be alerted as to whether your site is up or down? Being told
that the Sprint backbone in the Southeast is slow may not give
you the information you need when it's your own site that is
slow to load in general.
How responsive is
customer service?
Last but not least, how
helpful will a site monitoring service be when you run into a
problem or question? Will a bargain-basement service be of any
value if it doesn't offer you technical support?
Choosing a site monitoring
service depends first and foremost on what your objective is,
whether it be confirming uptime or downtime, or measuring your
customers' experience. It may seem like enough to just monitor
uptime and downtime, but don't underestimate the growing
importance of customer experience. With as much competition as
there is on the Web, you need to find the right site monitoring
service: one that can, and should, help you make the most of
your customers' time on your site.
