I'm frequently
asked how often one should submit or resubmit a Web site to the
spidering search engines.
Many people
believe they should submit their sites periodically to keep them
in the search engines' "faces."
Submitting URLs
that are already in a search engine's database is not a good
idea.
A rule of thumb
for submitting pages, old or new, is to check each engine to see
if the pages have been indexed. There's no reason to submit or
resubmit pages to an engine if the pages are already in its
database. If pages are in the database, they are listed on the
search engine.
To find out
whether your pages are listed on a search engine, type your Web
site address into the engine search box. Your indexed pages
should show up. Compare titles and descriptions you see with the
contents of your title tags and meta description tags on your
pages. If the engine shows your old titles and descriptions, it
hasn't yet indexed your new pages. If it shows your new stuff,
you're all set!
Here's how to
submit to the major spidering engines.
AltaVista
has always been one of the quickest to index new pages. You will
usually find your new pages listed with AltaVista within a week
or two.
In order to keep
the number of spam submittals in check, AltaVista has instituted
a new submittal procedure. Now when you submit a URL to its
add-URL form, you'll see some strange-looking letters. You're
instructed to type those letters into a box in order to continue
the submission. Once you do that, you can submit up to five
URLs.
I think it's a
neat idea to thwart automatic submission programs because only
human beings can read the letters. Since I hand submit anyway,
it's not a problem for me. As long as it means my submissions
are added in a relatively short time period, I'm all for it.
HotBot
uses the Inktomi database for its search results, so you can
submit to it in a variety of ways. You can use HotBot's add-URL
form, which is free. As with most search engines, HotBot/Inktomi
does not guarantee it will list all sites submitted through its
free add-URL forms.
For
guaranteed inclusion in its database, you might want to use the
Inktomi
Paid Inclusion Program.
Inktomi is
partnered with some submission companies that, for a fee,
guarantee the Inktomi spider will crawl your submitted pages
every 48 hours. Paid inclusion will keep your URL in the Inktomi
database for a year. You won't get any boost in rankings, but
you'll have peace of mind knowing your site is listed.

Excite
has been slow to add new pages and to reindex pages for at least
a year now. Though this service might be getting back on track,
it's difficult to be sure. Excite recently updated its database,
but it could be another six months before it does so again. The
company claims new sites will be added in three weeks; however,
I'm quite sure that's a pipe dream. If the past is any
indication, you can assume it will take three to six months for
new sites to appear.
Lycos
submissions have been working quickly and flawlessly lately. It
has been taking only a few weeks to get indexed by Lycos, which
is very nice indeed. Lycos also spiders through sites and adds
many inner pages without requiring them to be submitted.
Google
is another engine that does a good job of spidering through
sites. It's only necessary to add your main URL; Google will
eventually spider the rest of your site. It currently takes
between one and two months for Google to index and reindex
pages. Representatives from Google have warned that URLs found
by its spider are given more weight than those submitted through
the add-URL form. You might want to keep this in mind when
submitting to Google.
Once you've
submitted your URL to the engines, the next thing to do is
practice the fine art of patience.
If you can
stomach it, your best bet is to submit and forget. Wait three
months then check all the engines to which you've submitted.
I know three
months is probably too long for most of you to wait, but if you
don't like to be driven crazy it's a good strategy. I admit I
check at least once a month after submission; but waiting three
months is a smart idea for the average Web site owner.
After three
months, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised to find that
your site has been indexed by all the search engines. And better
yet, if you optimized your site correctly, it should be bringing
in tons of highly targeted traffic.
